My Life Is An 80′s T&A Movie: Private School

80's teen movies

Can I tell you how obsessed I am with Phoebe Cates lately? Sometimes I truly believe that my brain is psychically linked to one belonging to a teenage dude from 1985 and the cartoon cloud that floats above my head displays only pizza and gratuitous pair of tits. This clearly explains why I love me some 80′s sex comedies!

80's teen movies

Phoebe is best known for her infamous getting-out-of-the-pool scene in Fast Times At Ridgemont High, providing masturbation fodder for menz for all eternity. Soon after, she starred in a gem called Private School, which I first heard about through the almighty TNUC. Private School falls in the same vein as movies like Porky’s. There are the usual 80′s hijinks you can expect: teenage boys dressing in drag to sneak into the girls’ locker room, the quintessential good girl-versus-bad girl scenario…as well as an unforgettable topless horseback-riding scene.

Private School

Private School

Private School opens with good girl Christine, played by my angel Phoebe Cates, reading an excerpt from a sexy romance novel. She then decides she wants to bone down with her beau Jim, played by Matthew Modine. The lovers go through an array of obstacles on their way to Humptown. Jordan, the queen bitch of Cherryvale Academy, wants to steal Jim from Christine. She is played by Betsy Russell, who ALSO stars in the sequel to Angel!! See how we are all connected here people.

Private School

Private School

One of the best things about Private School is the soundtrack. The film begins with “You’re Breaking My Heart” by Harry Nilsson, Vanity 6′s “Nasty Girl” plays during the girls locker room scene and there are also TWO songs sung by Phoebe herself!! My favorite is “How Do I Let You Know.”

Private School

Jim’s friends only have one thing on their minds, S-E-X. WTF at that video game. Yes, it is exactly what you think it might be about.

whorsebackriding

The infamous horseback riding scene!

Kathleen Wilhoite is such a badass…but her tragic hairdon’t kills me.

Okay you guys, let’s talk about something here. I want to confess to you that I have become a bit of a GYM BUNNY. I KNOW!! Don’t faint. I’m just doing some cardio to work on that waist-to-hip ratio OKRRR. My complaint is I wish gym clothes were cuter! Why can’t everyone in my turbo kickboxing class be wearing outfits like this??

Private School

Don’t get me wrong, I am happy that I now have a place to wear my strange t-shirts acquired from travels (Tokyo Parasite Museum shirt, “I Climbed The Great Wall of China shirt” as well as my John Staymoist and Herve Villechaize t-shirts a friend made me years ago) but if they had more Marie-esque options for workout gear, I’d be even more pumped to be doing my high kicks and deep squats. My dream is to someday have the exact outfit as the girl below.

Private School

For now, I’m just excited to have found some exercise pants that don’t display a camel toe. I am also on the search for comfortable sneaks but I really CANNOT DO THIS:

shapeups

NO OFFENSE. I’m thinking Nike Musiques might be the best ones for my workout personally, instead of Reebok Eastytones. I just know they have to be black and good for cardio dance. GAWD I am really writing about “working out” and “sneakers”?! What is this? Who am I? I don’t even recognize myself anymore. Someone hand me a drink!!!

Do any of you workout? If so PLE share some tips/thoughts/everythangs.

OK, budding gym bunny here, too, and I’m kinda horrified by that, but ANYHOO… I got a pair of these – http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/ – and they’re pretty much the best thing evar for running and working out.

The only I get myself to run on my treadmill or do exercise videos (I’m too cheap to join a gym) is to watch TV shows on my laptop while I’m doing it. It’s perfect, 50 minute episode of Dexter = 50 minutes of something with a ridiculous name like Ulimate Fat-Burning Sculpting Dance Yogalates. I hold my favorite shows hostage and don’t let myself watch them unless I’m working out. It works about 50% of the time.

THAT is a great idea!! re: Dexter I am like five episodes behind! I need to catch up!

She sells nothing, and it’s no BS. (There’s good nutrition-type stuffs there, too.)

I am a huge gym bunny (straight up Aries sun!) and I agree with you about the cute clothes situation. I frankly dress like a bum to the gym which. There are lots of cute gym clothes in my opinion but most are quite costly. I really like shoes by Ryka, although they are not so cute, they are supposed to be designed with a women’s foot and body in mind and I’ve had lots of luck with those and New Balance (sometimes they have pink on them). I ran for years in highschool, still work out religiously and never once had problems with my feet (and I’m flat footed, so…)
The thing to remember is that at the gym, your shoes (and sports bra)’s performance are of utmost importance. It’s better to look unfashionable at the gym than end up injuring yourself b/c of improper footwear. Also, I’ve read that the shoes that supposedly work out your ass actually do not (that’s why squats and lunges were invented though).
Also, no one should feel bad about being a gym bunny if it’s about connecting with your own body (and not your form of purging say). Best of luck!

i’m a gym bunny and have no shame about it! exercise makes me sleep better, helps keep my depression at bay, makes sex better, improves my appetite for healthy food, decreases my stress levels, keeps my ass toight…

you only have to worry if you find yourself really digging the gym music and start trying to play it at parties. also, if your social life starts gravitating around the gym/ people you met at the gym/ coffee at the gym/ your gym program/ how many reps you can do per minute…then you probably are sporting a camel toe too, and you think it’s hot.

i’m all about the leggings under 70′s shorts with a crop top/old T over a vest (i don’t like to show too much flesh, it distracts the other gymers). i really like the look but some of the younger generation have asked me why i wear tights under my shorts. i thought this was a little rude. i don’t ask them why they don’t cover their fannies.

[Reply]

marie Reply:

I like the tights under shorts thing. I saw one girl who looked real cute wearing black exercise tights under some pink shorts.

Tell me about these magical exercise pants that don’t create camel toe! I use AA yoga pants and jersey capris, but length and camel toe are issues. Moving Comfort sports bras have been good to me for what little cardio I do, as are New Balance cross-trainers. Lucy and Lululemon have some pretty cute stuff, but, alas, they are too spendy for my empty wallet.

I work out at home. I currently do Yoga Sculpt and Cardio Kickboxing from ExerciseTV, hooping with a weighted Sports Hoop (which is perfect because you can watch shit and catch up on TAL episodes while giving it a whirl) and Barre 3. Barre 3 is the most effective workout I have every done and I thank them for bringing me back to my pre-pregnancy weight after a two year battle with various ineffective workouts. If I could afford to go into their studio 3 to 4 times a week I would, but I have to settle for their DVD for the time being. As a general rule, I strive for working out 5 hours/week, but no less than 3 if times are busy.

Are you doing Turbo Kick at 24hr Fitness? I’ve been thinking of giving it a go as the kickboxing I’m doing now is getting too easy.

[Reply]

marie Reply:

The pants I got were from JCpenney! I will have to look up the brand. They are more for cardio or running and prob not comfortable for yoga though. Of course you would do the sports hoop! That’s awesome! I have tried that before only once. I’ll have to check out Barre 3, never heard of it! And yes, Turbo kick at 24 hr! It’s very dance-routiney which I like but it may depend on the instructor. It kicks my ass!

ZUMBA GIRL ZUMBA! Latin beats, ridiculous dance moves that I can’t keep up with but don’t care because I’m shaking my J.Lo booty and working off the brownie breakfast I had this morning. It’s the stuff dreams are made of.

Besides that I’m super anti-social (I think there’s a special circle in hell for whoever thought up putting windows and wall to wall mirrors in gyms…) and just play games at home on my Wii. I just bought myself Dance Dance Revolution as a Christmas present and am hoping Santa brings me Just Dance.

I am totally going to be a zumba instructor in a few years. Not even kidding! I think it might be my calling.

Oohh I know I’d love this! Shape-ups are so nast. I started doing Punk Rock Aerobics a couple years ago after a buddy gave me the book as a joke…then I broke down after years of feeling too PR and joined a gym this summer after I started waitressing again and thus my eggs benedict intake went way up. My gym is usually not too busy so no one cares that I’m tattooed and tattered. Working out for poor people…I wear my running shoes from high school which are in remarkably good shape! Ha! I also like Yoga Zone dvds which you can do at home without anyone seeing your camel toe.

Hahah I think I might have some sort of punk rock aerobics dvd in my amazon wishlist from a couple years ago. My sneakers are totally from 2002 and still in good shape as well! ahhaha! but they are just not good for the cardio dance I’m doing :(

I work out a lot because I am asthmatic and I have no choice, it is that or medication. At first, I HATED it. Its sweaty and unintersting and confusing. After a while though, you will take note of the little victories and that is when you will really start to enjoy it. Do not be afraid of weights, all the cardio in the world will not get you in shape if you dont do weight machines, especially the leg ones because those build muscle the fastest. Change up your routine so you dont get bored, and reward yourself with yummy treats after! Sorry for the rant, hope it works out!
