As we all know, I am a big accessory whore especially for all that is colorful, girly and bownerriffic, so when I found out about Cutie Dynamite, an adorable jewelry and hair accessory line based out of Northern California, my weave sang a wistful tune. Andrea Mota, the lovely lady behind Cutie Dynamite, sees the world through Swarovski-studded heart-shaped sunglasses all while spreading her own brand of kitschy cute throughout!
Tulle, bows, ruffles, vintage velvets and lace, Swarovski crystals, feathers and sequins are just some of the elements she uses to make her accessories…which are all of my favorite ingredients! I had to get the lowdown on Andrea, (a fellow member of the International Society of Black Hair, Bangs and Red Lipstick) and her inspirations for Cutie Dynamite!
How did you get started designing accessories?
I have always loved to make things. As a kid I lived in a commune for a little while, and one of the couples taught me how to make silver jewelry. They made a living off what they made and sold, and that idea really stuck with me. I’ve gone through phases of making and selling clothing as well, but at one point I realized that I was making entirely too many hair accessories for myself to ever wear, so i decided it was time to start selling them! I received a lot of support from my fellow crafty ladies and my amazing boyfriend and set up shop in December of 2007 and have been spreading the cuteness ever since!
Can you describe the inspiration behind Cutie Dynamite?
Cute girls! Being fabulous at all times, decadence, sweets, vintage and street fashions all mashed together.
Where did you grow up? Did it influence your aesthetic at all?
I grew up and still live in a small town in Northern California. Everybody knows each other here, and as a result I think I always wanted to stand out that much more! The beauty and the calm of the area is conducive to my being productive. While the items I design don’t make you think of vineyards, redwoods and rolling hills, I really doubt I could do this anywhere else.
On the other hand, I also spent most of my time as a pre-teen living in Mexico, and I know that shaped me, without a doubt. I was constantly surrounded by amazing color, music, art, culture and food.
What is your design process?
It really depends on my mood. Sometimes its all about color, or texture….sometimes I just need the perfect accessory to go with a dress! The process is really just “what do I want to wear?”. I’ll start sewing, and when I emerge from my work room covered in sequins, feathers and Swarovski crystals, I always say it’s the cutest thing I’ve ever made!
Who are some other artists, designers or otherwise, do you admire?
It may sound cheesy, but anyone who gets out there and shares their talents with the world! I’m a huge fan of John Galliano’s work as well as the late Alexander McQueen. Miss Amy, the mastermind behind Shrinkle and Sugarpill has been a big inspiration as well as all the lovely DIY ladies out there!
If you could describe your style as the love child of any two people/things, who or what would they be?
On a perfect day, Jayne Mansfield and a Rock ‘N’ Roll Minnie Mouse!
What are your wardrobe staples?
Lots of glittering accessories, fabulous frocks, perilously high heels, black skinny jeans, and my motorcycle boots.
Is there anything you collect?
Yes! Vintage rubber toys, vintage jewelry, vintage hats, cameos, anything with a bow on it, Kewpie dolls, and any cute figurine with a bow-tie and a confused but ecstatic look on its face!
What are your other interests and hobbies?
Singing and making music. Listening and dancing to loud music. Travel! Going to exotic places and eating, shopping, meeting new people, seeing bands! Baking delicious things and eating them with tea(which I am doing now as I write this!!). Reading about flappers, crackpots, rebels, quacks, grifters, cool people. Naturally, myself, and my dog Elvis!
What’s next in the world of Cutie Dynamite?
Next up…a real website…finally! More jewelry, more fabulousness, more over-the-topedness, more cuteness!

HELLO LADIES AND GENTS, it is time to chat about another one of my favorite goddesses from the eighties …. Shelley Long. You may know her from Cheers, Outrageous Fortune (starring my other idol Bette Midler) or even the little known masterpiece, Hello Again!, but for me her most memorable role was as the gold-hearted glamourpuss Phyllis Nefler in Troop Beverly Hills!
Not only did this movie speak to lil’ Rie Rie back in the Girl Scout (dropout) days, but it featured some of the most famous network TV child actors back then like Harriet from Small Wonder, Margot from Punky Brewster, Kellie Martin from Life Goes On and even Jenny Lewis when Rilo Kiley was just a twinkle in her eye.
When we first meet Phyllis, she is a spoiled Beverly Hills housewife going through a divorce from her sugar daddy played by Craig T. Nelson aka COACH. In an effort to start anew, she decides to become the leader of her daughter’s Wilderness Girls Troop…but can Phyllis, who only cares about jewelry, chisme, shopping and getting her nailsdid, be a good role model for the girls?
LOOK AT ALL THESE OUTRAGEOUS GETUPS! The costume designer was none other than Theodora Van Runkle who was the designer for Bonnie and Clyde.
Now Phyllis doesn’t conform easily. Like every badass babe, she respects the traditions of her new responsibility, but does things HER WAY. She tweaks things to retain her uniqueness starting with the uniforms. I LOVE THEM!! I wish I had every single one and I hate beige! KHAKI-LISHIS.
GIMME THE GOLD NEF!
You know I love a woman who dresses in theme.
The sad truth is this is how I look like when I am about to leave on a weekend trip.
I loved their craft presentation which was a backpack that held dresses in wrinkle-free condition. I need that in my life for when I go hiking in the mountains.
In no time, ol’ Phyll finds her place as a Wilderness Girl leader but not before dealing with a mob of haters (including preteen Tori Spelling) who try to sabotage her and the troop!
Luckily she has the support of her girls including bff Vickie, played by Stephanie Beacham of Dynasty fame. She is a sultry romance novelist who is always wearing leopard print…. HOLD THE PHONE. WAS THAT AN ODE TO OUR VERY OWN JACKIE COLLINS!!? I didn’t realize that until now! There was some line about “his manhood rising to a pulsating frenzy” that has stuck in my head all these years…NATURALLY!
Phyllis is able to carry herself with grace under pressure and wears a fabulous hat while doing so.
She ends up becoming an amazing troop leader and an inspiration to the girls and EVEN resurrects COACH’s boner for her.
And now… a CONTEST!
On November 13, Troop Beverly Hills: THE EXPERIENCE, a “sing-a-long, dance-a-long, quote-a-long!” of our fave movie, will be playing at the Downtown Independent Theater in LA! Aaand it’s a double feature with Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitters Dead (another fave of mine.) I am giving away two tickets to the show to one lucky Wilderness Girl or Boy! All you have to do is let me know if you were in the troop… what patch would you have earned? Most clever answer wins! I would definitely have earned the Bangs Tutorial Patch. The winner will be announced on Monday morning. YOU CAN STILL ENTER! COME ON LOS ANGELES!

SORRY for that PZZY TEAZE I gave you in the last post about rising from the ashes like Jean Grey and being ready for Blogtober, then disappearing again like an asshole. I hate blueballs as much as the next dude so shame on me for sassing you up and leaving you in the cold. What can I say? Real life got crazy for a minute there, blogging became a chore and Rie-Rie can’t do something if her gut isn’t into it. HOWEVER, something magical happened…MY BIRTHDAY! And not just any ol’ b-day but my DIRTY FLIRTY THIRTY. I know that sounds crazy since my asian genes make me look like I’m still barely legal but it’s true, here I am, a real live woman! WILD WOMEN DEW AND THEY DON’T REGRET IT
So what did I do to celebrate my quinceneara times two? I gathered my sexy besties for a weekend romp at my favorite hotel in the world…Madonna Inn! I had the time of my life with my boo crew even though it was raining and my Scandinavian crush ALEKS wasn’t working there anymore. Actually I don’t even know if he was even Scandinavian and he probably didn’t spell his name like that, but I MISS YOU ALEKS. As for the weekend’s activities, it was basically a huge cochina slumber party complete with girl-bonding, booty-clapping, Saved by the Bell trivia game, a lil’ bit of Ouija, a whole lotta booze and a memorable game of Truth or Dare. And of course picture-taking! Fancy ones will come later but here are some of my favorites. (BTW, if you are wondering, everything I wore was vintage.)
The angels that are employed by Madonna Inn gave me balloons matching either my dress or my nails. It’s the little things that will get you a 5 star Yelp review from me, BAYBEE.
Nikki got me this California Raisins SUIT
I shall now leave you with these spellbinding photos….I never tire of Photoboof.

HEY REMEMBER ME? It’s Marie, the shy and quiet ethnic girl sitting behind you in blog class. I know it’s been awhile (two weeks aka six months in internet years) since we’ve passed notes about our crushes, but I’m back and EXTREMELY pleased to introduce the month of October aka Ragetober aka Marielloween aka Spooks Awareness Month! Say good riddance to the most horrid time of our lives known as September 2010 where your #1 Boo had to to deal with being super sick for three weeks along with some other sexy thangs resulting in the winter of her wit. I was on antibiotics galore, even on the old school jam known as penicillin. (OMG VINTAGE!) I’m totally better now physically and spiritually so we can resume our heavy petting. This is the best month ever because it is my birthday and Halloween! So be prepared to be totally grossed out soon enough! I LUV EWE!
